Banner|Aetna Gives Back, Raises Funds for the 2025 Phoenix Heart Walk
Heart disease is the leading cause of death in Arizona, and for yet another year, Banner|Aetna gives back by stepping up to make a difference in the fight against this silent killer.
Through support of the Phoenix Heart Walk and other initiatives, Banner|Aetna is proud to contribute to the fight against heart disease and stroke. Since 2020, the company has raised nearly $175,000 to support the American Heart Association’s pioneering research, public health campaigns and educational programs.
For Dan Keller, Banner|Aetna’s chief financial officer and a member of the Phoenix Heart Walk Executive Leadership Team, the cause is personal. When he was a young adult, Dan’s father suffered multiple heart attacks.
“My dad had his first heart attack when I was in college,” Dan shares. “Back then, I thought, ‘It just happens when you’re older as my father was in good shape at the time.’ But now, I’m older than he was then, and I realize how important it is to take heart health seriously. There can be hidden factors that contribute to heart disease. The AHA provides educational resources on disease prevention and lifestyle changes to help individuals manage their heart health. That’s why I’m proud to support the American Heart Association’s mission.”
Dan’s story is just one of many that drive Banner|Aetna’s commitment to improving health outcomes. Beyond the involvement of our executive team, employees across the organization are stepping up to make a difference by volunteering as team captains for the Heart Walk. These leaders are not only raising funds but also sharing their personal stories and connections to the cause to inspire others to join the fight against heart disease.
Employees are at the forefront of how Banner|Aetna gives back to the community
Justin Davis, a team captain for the Heart Walk, has been involved for three years and has raised thousands of dollars for the cause. For Justin, the Heart Walk is more than a fundraising event—it’s an opportunity to bring coworkers together and build meaningful connections.
“I got involved in the Heart Walk when Banner|Aetna became a sponsor in 2020,” Justin says. “My grandfather died from heart disease, and knowing genetics play a role, I want to be here for my kids and grandkids. That’s why I’m passionate about this cause, and it’s why I encourage everyone to learn CPR. It’s a skill that can save lives.”
Debbie Crain, another team captain, has been a driving force behind Banner|Aetna’s fundraising efforts for four years and counting. For Debbie, the event is a chance to honor her loved ones and make a tangible impact on heart health.
“I walk because I know that with every step, I’m making a difference in someone’s life,” Debbie explains. “The funds raised have led to breakthroughs like pacemakers and artificial heart valves. I’m grateful for the CPR training I received years ago, and I want others to have that same confidence in an emergency.” Debbie’s passion is contagious; her enthusiasm for the Heart Walk is a reminder of how small actions can make a big impact.
Stella Ma is also making her mark as a newer team captain. For Stella, the Heart Walk is an opportunity to promote awareness and encourage healthy habits.
“Heart disease has affected my family, and I want to support the American Heart Association’s work in research and awareness,” Stella says. “The Heart Walk is a reminder of how important physical activity and a balanced diet are for heart health.”
